Invocations are often given at the start of meetings and other gatherings to set the tone of the proceedings. Most invocations are given by religious leaders, who use a prayer as their invocation, thereby alienating attendees who do not share their faith.
An invocation can be a wonderful tool of communication and cooperation, if done in an inclusive manner. It is vital for public officials to welcome all of their constituents to a gathering, not just a subgroup of believers. A secular invocation is a welcoming invitation for all participants to affirm the dignity of the proceedings and establish a sense of trust and understanding.
