Compassion is hard work

Compassion takes trust and courage. I feel like an outsider in my community, and I need to remind myself over and over again that my neighbors love their family members as powerfully as I do mine. They care about the safety of those around them, and they keep an eye on their children playing in the streets. They have American flags flying at their front door.

It’s easy to forget that we have principles in common. It can be difficult to search for a middle ground. Especially when it feels like the other party doesn’t want to meet you there.

I often fail in my efforts to communicate, but it’s not for lack of trying.

Tomorrow I’ll try again.
